Minister-designate for Interior Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has described as inhumane the GHc 1.80p allocated to inmates in our prisons.
He has therefore underscored the need for that change, immediately pledging to address that if he is approved.
He lamented that the prisons across the country are in a deplorable state.
He said that the inadequate budget allocated for feeding inmates was affecting their general well-being.
Speaking during his vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, 2025.
According to him, he was shocked when he got to know that the prisoners are giving this amount.
He also voiced concerns that the environment where inmates are kept is prone to contagious diseases due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.
“I was shocked when I heard that the rationing for feeding a prisoner in Ghana is GH¢1.80 for the whole day, and I doubt, with the greatest of respect, that even the cats and dogs in our houses, how much food do we give them that we will put our own compatriots, because of one mistake or the other, in trying to correct them, we feed them with GH¢1.80 and expect them to be healthy.?” Ghanaian travel experiences
“It is a very serious thing, and I assure my colleagues that I will pay attention to it and address it.”
