Minister-designate for Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has indicated that if approved and sworn in as minister, he will work with the professionals in the various security services under his supervision to review the recruitment processes.
He stated that there was the need to review the recruitment processes in the best interest of the country and to meet international standards.
Appearing before Parliament’s Vetting Committee on Friday, January 24, 2025, it was argued that the same recruitment processes had been used for the past 30 years under the fourth republic, and it was time to reconsider.
He was asked if he would commit to conducting a review to ensure that there is fair regional representation in the security services.
In his response, the nominee stated that, despite the challenges of the recruitment processes, he will engage with professionals and conduct the necessary reviews to improve the services.
The Asawase Member of Parliament (MP) said, ”I am going to a ministry that has a lot of professionals that are experts in their field. You can’t doubt the expertise of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), nor will you doubt the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service and the like, and I am going to be a team member and be working with them. Together with them, we have to review over the last 30, maybe 40, years, or since we started this fourth republican constitution, how have we done it? Has it served a purpose? If there are lapses, we will look at it and review it in the best interest of the country. But to sit here and assure you that we will do it based on regional, then we will go, and maybe some will say, Can we look at tribal, religious, and other balances? It will be difficult to give you a specific answer but to tell you that definitely recruitment into the security services is a serious concern for the average Ghanaian, and it requires a review of the process”.
