Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has announced that the new government will restore and convert polluted waterbodies to economic hubs.
He disclosed this when he appeared before the Vetting Committee on Monday, January 27, 2025.
The initiative is dubbed the Blue Water Initiative, which he explained would be executed as part of plans to rehabilitate polluted water sources and transform affected areas into hubs of ecological and economic recovery.
“We have some initiatives that will help us heal the wounds of our country,” Mr. Buah stated. “Our forest, which is the heart of our survival, has been completely damaged and devastated. The Blue Water Initiative seeks to heal and harness the areas degraded by illegal mining into hubs of economic and ecological recovery.”
Aside from the Blue Water Initiative, the Ellembelle MP announced plans for another major project: the Tree for Life Initiative.
According to him, the project will prioritise afforestation and reforestation efforts to restore Ghana’s forest cover, which has been severely depleted as a result of illegal logging, mining, and agricultural development.
“We are also going to do Tree for Life Initiative by intensifying afforestation and we will encourage afforestation across Ghana,” he added.
Meanwhile, he has opined that former President Dramani Mahama failed in his fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
“It’s true the NPP administration started very well; there was a ban on mining places; it was six months, and it extended to nine months,” he said.
“But at the end of the 8 years, the outcome is what we all know—degraded lands, polluted water bodies, and wanton destruction of forest reserves. These are clearly facts that indicate that that fight against was a failure.”
