The Member of Parliament of Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has made a strong case for the need for intra-party reforms on how candidates are selected by the various political parties.
The acting spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama says the intraparty reforms were needed because the monetisation of the process has become detrimental to the well-being of the house.
He lamented that the quality of the candidates contesting has been relegated to the back with those with the money taking over.
The new entrant to parliament stated that there were periods when parties had to go for headhunting in order to select candidates for certain constituencies, and now every Tom, Dick, and Harry is getting elected as parliamentary candidates because they have the deep pockets.
‘This is not sustainable. The amounts of money that one has to spend in order to win party primaries often affect one’s ability to prosecute a meaningful campaign because by the time the primaries are over, you would be in debt or be totally bankrupt. So reforms are an absolute necessity in terms of how primaries are structured and how candidates emerge,’ he noted.
