Director for the Ga East National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Seth Kissi says the key objective of the organisation is to prevent disaster.
He noted that, while they are responsible for managing disasters and providing relief materials, their primary objective is to implement steps to prevent disasters from occurring.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he explained that the mandate of NADMO includes all activities from preparedness to response and recovery to prevent disasters.
He added that they are also responsible for creating awareness in disaster-prone communities and institutions on all disaster types, training and motivating the communities, especially volunteers, to initiate actions to prevent and respond to disasters.
“It is true that we provide relief items to disaster victims, but that is not our primary objective. When necessary, we provide relief items. Our primary objective is to raise awareness and prevent disasters. However, in the event of a disaster, we provide relief to victims and assist in reducing poverty in vulnerable and impoverished communities. We also undertake these activities through social mobilisation, promoting employment creation and income generation.”
Mr. Seth Kissi stressed that NADMO has the responsibility of preparing national disaster plans for preventing and mitigating the consequences of disasters.
“We also work in collaboration with other agencies in dealing with disasters across the country. Our operations extend to the monitoring, evaluation, and providing assessment of every situation. We also ensure that there are appropriate and adequate facilities for the provision of relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction after any disaster.”
