Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been summoned to appear before Parliament’s Vetting Committee over alleged comments he made about members.
The committee members asked him to appear before them to provide evidence to support his allegations.
Several members of the committee opined that the lawyer has tainted their reputation with his allegations.
Some of them suggested to the Committee’s Chair to suspend the vetting until the matter is resolved, while others felt comments, no matter how derogatory, should prevent parliament from performing its functions.
On January 24, 2025, Barker-Vormawor shared a Facebook post in which some have suggested he accused the committee members of taking money from the nominees of President John Dramani Mahama before approving them.
In the said post, he quizzed if the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) will not be interested in the matter.
He wrote, ‘’So all the money the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved, are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic”.
The committee, during deliberations on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, stressed that it was important for the lawyer to appear before them to answer questions.
Frank Annor-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip, stated unequivocally that his party will not participate in the Vetting until they have been cleared of this accusation.
He looked at the Chair, Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, and stated that he will not participate in the exercise.
Meanwhile, Bernard Ahiafor has dismissed the accusations, stating categorically that neither he nor any members of the committee had engaged in such practices.
“So, I am therefore directing the clerk to the committee to invite him to appear before the committee tomorrow [Wednesday] to substantiate his claims, or we will apply the necessary law,” Mr. Ahiafor noted.
