The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has warned all individuals and entities involved in illegal mining, both small- and large-scale, to halt their operations immediately.
The agency in the statement indicated that illegal mining activities have caused destruction of water bodies across the country.
According to the EPA, these unlawful operations pose significant risks to the environment, public health, and Ghana’s natural resources.
It indicated that all mining activities must comply with Ghana’s environmental regulations, which mandate obtaining proper permits and implementing sustainable practices to minimise environmental damage.
“In accordance with Sections 2 and 3b(ii) of the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124), the EPA hereby issues this urgent directive to all individuals and entities involved in illegal mining (galamsey) and other unauthorised operations in water bodies, both small-scale and large-scale, and are instructed to cease all activities with immediate effect.”
The EPA said it will collaborate with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), the Minerals Commission, the Water Resources Commission, and security agencies to enforce the law.
Meanwhile, the EPA has revealed its decision to confiscate machinery used in illegal mining operations as mandated by law.
It has planned to roll out an intensified monitoring and inspection of mining sites to ensure compliance.
