Oliver Barker-Vormawor has rendered an apology to Parliament’s Appointments Committee, saying his bribery allegations were not meant to disparage them.
The private legal practitioner was dragged before the committee to provide evidence of comments he posted on his official Facebook page.
In his post, he wrote, “So all the money the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved, are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic.”
He admitted to the post but described as fake a second post that was attributed to him.
The second post read,’NDC members on the vetting committee take money from Mahama’s ministerial nominee before approving them. The deputy speaker must submit to ORAL.
Speaking during his appearance before the committee on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Mr. Barker-Vormawor stated that his comments were not intended to harm the committee’s reputation.
“I want to make it clear that my post was not meant to disparage any member of the committee. I did not intend to imply that committee members received or demanded bribes from any individual. For this reason, I apologise,” he said.
“I’m saying here clearly that my post was not intended to disparage members of the committee and I have not intended to say that members of this committee have received or demanded bribe from various individuals. At no point was my statement intended to communicate same and for these reasons I apologise,” he said.
“I am happy to pull it down as the conversation has indicated and clarity has been brought to it,” he added.
“I reiterate again categorically and for all intense and purposes that I have at no point authored those words. All I know about that statement is that it appeared on an NPP projects bureau Facebook account, I don’t know the source of it,” he added.
Meanwhile, the chair of the committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has directed him to issue a disclaimer in response to the fake post and withdraw the post he admitted to posting.
