Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has insisted that his remarks about Chief Justice Gertrude Tokornoo were not derogatory or insulting, as suggested, and that he will not apologise.
The Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament claims that if the Chief Justice deemed his comments about her to be contemptuous, she had the authority to cite him for contempt and summon him to court to respond.
The Minority Leader and ranking member of the vetting committee has been grilling the nominee for hours, arguing that his “attacks” on the Chief Justice were unfair, but the nominee has insisted that he never attacked the Chief Justice.
He revealed to the Committee that the Chief Justice had the opportunity to write to him twice, and that if she ever felt he (Sam George) had made remarks in contempt of court, she should have taken action against him.
‘’Post this social media post. The Chief Justice has had the occasion to write to me on two occasions through the Judicial Secretary. The Chief Justice is clothed with powers of contempt; if she thought and held the view that legally I had erred, the Supreme Court of Ghana is not one that has shied away from using its contempt powers. They failed to hurl me contempt because I have erred, and I am sure Justice herself and the Judicial Council recognise that constructive criticism is helpful for the dispensation of our justice system.’’
