Labour, Jobs, and Employment Minister-designate Rashid Pelpuo has committed to rolling out measures to deal with abuse suffered by workers, particularly in the hands of foreign businesses.
He was responding to a question posed to him about what he will do to address issues of maltreatment, harassment, physical assaults, and all manner of other ill treatments.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, asked the nominee whether he had any assurance that Ghanaian workers working for foreigners would be safe.
In his response, the nominee and lawmaker assured the committee that this is something he will commit to.
‘’Mr. Speaker, human rights is one of the areas in which I particularly show direct interest. In fact, when I do watch television and I see people suffering elsewhere, it hurts me, and right in my own country, it is something I want to enforce that people must have rights to work; they must have rights to safety. Workplace abuse must not happen. It is against the law. It should not happen. So in whatever way I can do to eliminate it, I will do it. So I have a personal attachment to safeties and the rights of people wherever they are.”
