Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has informed the Appointments Committee of Parliament that he will address child labour.
During his ministerial vetting on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Dr. Pelpuo emphasised the importance of making child employment a criminal offence so that abusers are held accountable.
He described his interactions with the European Union to address concerns about child labour in Ghana, noting the EU’s primary issue was the exploitation of minors in the cocoa sector.
The candidate stated that, while some children accompany their parents to work, this cultural practice has turned into a difficult working environment.
“The issue of child labour is a serious one, and we need to address it head-on. “We must eliminate child labour from our workforce and make it a criminal offence so that nobody can engage in it and go free without reason.”
