President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated the Prof. H. Kwesi Prempeh-led committee tasked with identifying gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional review efforts.
The 8-member committee has also been asked to engage with stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives, and formulating actionable recommendations to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions and processes.
The official inauguration ceremony took place today, January 30, 2025, at the Jubilee House, where the president swore an oath to the committee, officially launching their work.
In his address, Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, stated that, as the committee’s name implies, its primary responsibility is to review the republic’s 1992 constitution.
He said that while this appears to be a simple task, there is more to it than meets the eye.
“You have been carefully selected for this important work on behalf of our country. The easier part of the job is to follow the prescribed method for altering the constitution. The more challenging aspect, and I can say this without fear of contradiction, is to recommend substantive provisions to add to or replace elements of the current constitution,” he said in his address.
In his remarks, President John Dramani Mahama expressed confidence in the committee and charged them with carrying out this exercise in the best interests of Ghanaians.
He said, “The call for constitutional reform is not an admission of failure, but an acknowledgment of progress, a recognition that our democracy must be dynamic, responsive, and ever attuned to the needs of our people.”
Prof. H. Kwesi Prempeh, Chair of the Committee, on behalf of the other members, expressed their willingness to deliver on the task assigned to them.
He thanked the President for putting his trust in them individually and as a group to carry out this mandate.
The committee is expected to make comprehensive and impactful recommendations within a five-month period.
The committee comprises the following.
1. Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman
2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member
3. Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member
4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member
5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member
