Richard Ahiafor, Chair of the Vetting Committee of Parliament, has rendered an apology to Ghanaians following the chaotic scenes that erupted during the vetting proceedings on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
He stated that the committee takes full responsibility for what happened and appropriate measures would be put in place to address what happened to ensure it does not repeat itself.
Tensions erupted during an Appointments Committee meeting when members of the Minority and Majority Caucuses clashed over Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Minority members disrupted the session by breaking tables and microphones in an attempt to avoid any delays.
Addressing the issue on Friday, January 31, 2025, Richard Ahiafor indicated that the members on the committee would want to apologise and take full responsibility.
He described what happened as unfortunate, especially when the situation led to physical altercation.
He said the damage to the items affected the functionality of the committee and the dignity of Parliament and its members.
He said proceedings will carry on without any technical challenges and pledged to a swift return to order to ensure the integrity of the committee.
The actions that unfolded last night have drawn significant concern from the public and underscore the need for reflection on the conduct and professionalism of all MPs and the institution of parliament, saying it is crucial to restore confidence in its ability to function effectively and responsibly.
‘’What happened last night is totally unacceptable, and we take full responsibility for the unfortunate incident. The Appointments Committee would like to offer an unqualified apology to the Rt. Honourable Speaker, the leadership and Members of Parliament, as well as the public, for the unfortunate incident, and we would like to reiterate that we are committed to working for the growth of our democracy.’’
