The Ministry of Education has refuted media reports suggesting that the government will scrap teacher trainee allowances.
The Education Ministry has clarified that the government will maintain allowances for students in Colleges of Education and may consider an improved student loan scheme as additional support.
The Daily Graphic newspaper, in its publication on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, reported that the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, had claimed that the government would scrap the allowances in the long term and enhance the student loan scheme.
This, the paper said, was at a meeting between the minister and executives of the principals of colleges of education (PRINCOF).
The ministry, in its statement, noted that the government would maintain the allowances until all stakeholders reach a firm agreement following further deliberations.
The statement, which was issued today, Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Ministry said, “The Ministry has taken note of a front-page publication in the Tuesday, 4th February 2025 edition of The Daily Graphic with the headline ‘Teacher Trainee Allowance to go.’ The headline is not only sensational but also misleading, as their narration of the story indicated.”
It has therefore advised the media to verify information with them before publication to prevent misinformation.
To the Ghanaian public, the Ministry said, “We urge the public to disregard the misleading publication and rely on official communication from the Ministry for accurate information.”
