Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accepted full responsibility for the involvement of some members of his caucus in the chaotic scenes that occurred during the vetting proceedings on Thursday, January 30, 2025, and Friday, January 31, 2025.
Delivering an address before the House on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin stated that he will not undermine the Speaker’s authority, and that they accept his authority, which is why they agreed in consensus with the Majority to vote for him as Speaker.
He described the Speaker’s directive as timely and assuring the Ghanaian public that this house is indeed prepared to uphold democracy and do what is right in the eyes of the people.
He said that, notwithstanding, he has written to the Speaker expressing procedural concerns about the suspension of four Members of Parliament.
He assured the Ghanaian public that this action would no longer happen again, saying,’Mr. Speaker, I take full responsibility as the leader on my side and all actions that took place. I will therefore conclude by inviting you, Mr. Speaker, to, in the circumstance and with the assurances given, consider a recession of the decision you communicated to the house as well as all consequential matters there.
He revealed that his side expressed concerns about the Majority side’s failure to notify them of a decision to invite more nominees to be vetted against the original number of people they had agreed upon.
He added that, while they had protested the action and intended to do so peacefully, things escalated.
