The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated categorically that his side is opposed to the nomination of Sam George as Minister for Communications.
The reason they are opposed to the approval of the nominee he explained was due to his past language in criticising former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Mr Afenyo-Markin posited the comments or remarks the Minister-designate made about the former president and Chief Justice were unbecoming of a ministerial nominee.
He further stated that the nominee failed to provide documentation to support claims regarding sources of income among other factors.
“We believe that only a few people in this country get the opportunity to become president of this nation. In governance, a president encounters a lot of challenges, some he may not even know, and for the nominee to insist that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo benefitted from galamsey is most unfortunate,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
“This is the same nominee who has been holding other public officers to high standards and if you are demanding high standards and if you are demanding from other public officers accountability, then the rule is clear: he who comes to equity must do equity and he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,” he added.
“Mr. Speaker, we are simply saying on the basis of these, we maintain our opposition and therefore will express our protest in a vote only against this nominee and we do so without prejudice,” Afenyo-Markin said.
The Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza took a different opinion from what the Minority leader said.
“Sam George is not the owner of his wife… If your wife owns a business, you need her permission to be able to give details of that business. So the idea that when you’re being vetted, you can be vetted on everything including personal things,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sam George’s approval will be decided by a majority decision following the refusal of the Minority to support the Majority.
