We need urgent action on the CSM outbreak—Medical Lab Scientists

mini

A recent outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in some areas of Northern Ghana has prompted concerns from the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS).

GAMLS issued a statement on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, advising healthcare facilities to prioritise laboratory diagnostics and urging authorities to ensure that laboratories have the necessary logistics and resources, particularly in affected regions.

It advocated for increased capacity in microbiological laboratories across the country.

The Association stated that improved laboratory infrastructure and capabilities would benefit efforts to detect and respond to CSM outbreaks as well as those for other emerging infectious diseases.

According to GAMLS, it is ready to support the national response to the outbreak and has urged all stakeholders, including the government and public health institutions, to collaborate to prevent the spread of CSM in Ghana.
