A four-month-old infant has succumbed to fatal burns in a devastating fire outbreak that occurred at Kisseman, near Achimota, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire has razed multiple apartments and shops, prompting the deployment of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service to the scene to contain the blaze.
However, the firefighting efforts have been hindered by the presence of highly combustible materials.
Confirming the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, ADO 1 Alex Nartey described the infant’s demise as unfortunate.
According to Nartey, the GNFS received notification of the outbreak around 4:00 am.
He cited the highly combustible materials involved as a significant challenge, noting that numerous residents had gas cylinders in their wooden structures, which further complicated their efforts.*
Mr. Nartey stated that the infant’s parents, known to be habitual drunkards in the area, were intoxicated on the night of the incident and had left their child inside while they slept outside, thereby unable to rescue the infant when the fire broke out.
The fire reportedly originated from the parents’ structure, where they had left gas cylinders on and a candle lit.
