The National Tenants Union of Ghana has described the Rent Control Department as an ineffective institution that must be revamped immediately.
Secretary-General Frederick believes the department is like a toothless bulldog.
He says the department has failed to regulate rent and its related areas as required by law.
He said at every point in time, we have people becoming tenants, and the laws of the country ought to protect them.
He noted that, unfortunately, there are several people abusing our rent laws, and yet the department responsible for regulating the ale is not able to do its work, and for that matter, people are being cheated.
He lamented that about 19 million Ghanaian tenants have been left to their fate because the regulator is inefficient and incompetent. He said the rent law ought to be reviewed to meet the changing trends in the country.
He was worried that although landlords are not supposed to rent out their rooms and accept rent not exceeding 6 months, it has become a norm for the majority of landlords to take two years or more.
“It is unlawful, and the department is not doing anything about it.”
