Klottey-Korle MP advocates for specialised courts to deal with cybercrime

Zanetor-Rawlings

Klottey-Korle MP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has advocated for the creation of specialised courts in order to address Ghana’s growing cybercrime problem.

She made the appeal after sharing her personal experience of being targeted by cybercriminals and noting the challenges faced by the Ghana Police Service in addressing the issue within the current court system.

The lawmaker made the call on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

She was of the view that there was a need for a more structured and efficient legal response to combat the growing threats posed by cybercriminals, particularly through social media platforms.

According to her, she had personally encountered numerous fraudulent accounts across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings said she had reported fake profiles to the Cybersecurity Authority and the Ghana Police Service repeatedly.

She asserted that cybercrime affects not only politicians but also ordinary citizens across the country.

The medical professional stressed the need for the establishment of specialised cybercrime courts, arguing that these courts would be presided over by judges proficient in digital law and cybercrime, ensuring that complex cases are handled efficiently and expeditiously.

“The situation is worsening, with victims becoming more vulnerable and helpless. “These criminals not only impersonate public figures but also deceive and exploit people, causing significant financial and reputational damage. We need stronger legislation
and increased public education on online safety.”

She also called for greater interagency collaboration among the Ghana Police Service, the Cybersecurity Authority, the Bureau of National Communications, and other relevant bodies.

She indicated that this would help improve intelligence sharing and help authorities track and apprehend cybercriminals more effectively.
