My government will implement a strict accountability system — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to implement a strict accountability system and develop a code of conduct for those in positions of trust.

As a result, he has informed his appointees that he will pursue not only corrupt officials from the previous government, but also those from his administration who must be held accountable.

“We are not going to pursue only members of the past regime to account to the people of Ghana. We are going to pursue our own people and make sure they are held accountable to the people of Ghana. So even as we investigate those who have just left office and we carry out Operation Retrieve All the Loot, those who are current should also know that they will be held to the same standard as we are holding the past regime.”

The President made the remarks during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western Region.

He reiterated the same message while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of newly approved ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025.2.10

He maintained that his administration would not tolerate arrogance, extravagance, or abuse of public resources.

“The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. There will be no room for arrogance and pomposity. The resources you will be working with belong to the Ghanaian people who put us in office,” he stated.

The president has also prohibited government officials from travelling for nonessential purposes as part of efforts to reduce government spending.

He instructed the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to implement this policy, making sure that any required travel is approved by his office beforehand and done in a modest manner.

“No first-class air travel will be allowed. Also, all traces of affluence and lavish lifestyles are to be avoided,” John Mahama said.

“Our mission as a government is not to dispossess the people we govern of their dignity, livelihoods, and opportunities. Rather, it is our duty to enrich our country and ensure the fair distribution of the gains of progress and prosperity to all,” he noted.
