The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) says its preliminary investigation into recent road accidents has revealed that indiscipline on the part of drivers is to blame.
The Authority explained that wrongful overtaking and speeding are some of the reasons we have witnessed a sharp rise in road accidents, especially after the festive season.
Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Authority’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), noted that it was prudent to involve key stakeholders in examining their approaches and collaborating to address the difficulties.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she said it was troubling that we have seen an increase in the accidents after the holidays.
“Our preliminary investigation shows that indiscipline and overtaking are some of the reasons for the recent increase in road accidents. So we have instructed some of our officials to partner with the Ghana Police Service to go to the various accident scenes and review the accidents so we can identify new strategies in dealing with the problem. The increase in the accidents is alarming. Easter has not yet approached, and yet we have seen a sharp rise in road accidents. That is troubling, and we have a duty in dealing with it.”
“We will continue to work with all stakeholders in dealing with the situation. This is a situation that needs immediate attention, and so we will put in measures that will help us reduce the accidents drastically,” she added.
Using the Frokrom accident as an example, she stated that the two vehicles were battling over passengers, causing the drivers to overtake each other and crash.
Pearl Adusu Sateckla indicated that advised drivers to Maia gain discipline on our roads by abusing the road safety measures to help save lives.
