The Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Pearl Adusu Sateckla, has disclosed that the recent spate of road accidents is a major concern.
She revealed that the Authority, currently under the leadership of private legal practitioner Abraham Amaliba, is reviewing strategies and the approaches used towards the prevention of road accidents.
According to her, the National Road Safety Authority’s Acting Director has started an inspection of road infrastructure in the capital and is also reviewing why the road accidents have increased in recent times.
“We have taken steps in engaging innpublic education, advocacy and stakeholder engagements in a bid to prevent accidents. However, we have discovered that in recent times, the accidents have increased. So as I speak with you, the Authority is reviewing our activities and developing new strategies that will help prevent road accidents.”
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she noted that “when you examine how the road accidents have increased in recent times, there was the need to engage with stakeholders as part of our efforts in reducing the accidents.”.
Pearl Adusu Sateckla also disclosed that the preliminary investigation has revealed that indiscipline on our roads, speeding, and overtaking are some of the reasons we have seen the increase in road accidents.
“Our preliminary investigation shows that indiscipline and overtaking are some of the reasons for the recent increase in road accidents. So we have instructed some of our officials to partner with the Ghana Police Service to go to the various accident scenes, review the accidents so we can identify new strategies in dealing with the problem. The increase in the accidents is alarming. Easter has not yet approached, and yet we have seen a sharp rise in road accidents. That is troubling, and we have a duty in dealing with it.”
She stressed that “we will continue to work with all stakeholders in dealing with the situation.”.
