The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have entered into a strategic agreement to improve electricity supply capacity in the Ashanti Region.
The partnership forms part of efforts aimed at addressing the region’s escalating demand for power.
Per the details of the partnership, there are plans between the two institutions to upgrade one of the existing 66MVA transformers with a new 145MVA power transformer between GRIDCo and ECG Bulk Supply Points.
The upgrade is expected to increase installed capacity to address peak load demands, particularly during the evening hours (7pm-11pm).
In the past, the 66 MVA transformers at Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) were often strained to their maximum capacity during peak periods.
But the pending upgrade will help increase the installed capacity, upgrading the 66 MVA to 145 MVA.
It will enhance supply reliability across the region and improve supply stability in the greater Kumasi metropolis.
Speaking to journalists, Engineer Peter Kofi Fletcher said this will go a long way in helping the current situation.
He has also admonished the public, road, and building contractors to inform ECG before commencing business, as most of their cables have been implanted underground.
“We are upgrading a particular transformer from 66 MVA to 145 MVA. Basically, what this means is that we are increasing electricity capacity in Kumasi to meet the current demand and future demand. You realise that even in Kumasi, developed areas, some structures are even springing.
