A tax analyst and Executive Director of Revenue Mobilisation Africa has proposed to the government that all looted assets and stolen funds be recovered from the individuals responsible, rather than the usual jail term.
Geoffrey Ocansey stated that he would prefer that all individuals cited for corruption and corruption-related activities be made to pay for their loot, as going to prison will not return the looted assets.
In an appearance on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline, he stated that if it is proven that some individuals stole from the state and invested the funds in assets, the state must seize and sell these assets to recover the stolen funds.
He submitted that corruption was still a national canker that must be dealt with with the key focus on retrieving all looted assets.
”Corruption remains a challenge in Ghana. The most important thing is to recover the money lost through corruption. Personally, I don’t agree with imprisoning corrupt officials. I prefer that the stolen funds be recovered. Some have even suggested that the female National Authority (NSA) official accused of being behind the ghost names scandal be imprisoned. I’m not concerned about her being imprisoned for me; I’d rather see the money she allegedly stole returned. If the money was used to buy houses, the state must seize and sell them to pay back the looted funds.”
