Election Watch Ghana, a civil society organisation, has expressed disappointment in how the Council of State election has been heavily politicised along partisan lines.
Convener Mark Ewusi Arkoh stated that politicising the Council State election would be unwise and dangerous given its role in advising the President.
He has emphasised the importance of Ghanaians resisting any attempts by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party to politicise the process.
He argued that the Council of State is not a politically exposed institution and thus must be politicised.
“We do not have to tolerate the politicisation of the Council of State. Failure to do so will have negative consequences for our democracy and national development. The Council of State is not a politically exposed institution. They represent the good people of Ghana. Their primary responsibility is to advise the President, so electing them and allowing politicians to interfere with the process would set a dangerous precedent. We should not allow the NDC and NPP turn this into a political chess game. It is a respectable and dignified institution, so let us avoid politicising it,” he said on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline.
