The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend and enforce a broadcast ban on Gumah FM in Bawku.
According to a media advisory issued by the ministry, the station will be closed due to urgent national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The advisory stated that REGSEC had conducted a thorough review of recent security developments in Bawku and other parts of the North Eastern Region.
‘’Intelligence reports indicate that Gumah FM Station has been used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in the region.’’
The directive to shut down the station in accordance with the ministry is being done in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which empowers the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend or revoke the frequency authorisations in the interest of national security, public order, or the public interest.
In line with the directive:
- Gumah FM Station must cease all operations with immediate effect.
- Ongoing monitoring will be implemented to prevent the establishment of alternative platforms that may be used to propogate violence or further desstabilize the region.
