Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, was arrested today, Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
The MP was arrested in Parliament following a warrant issued by the High Court in Koforidua.
According to Rainbow Radio’s Parliamentary Correspondent, Boshyeba Afriyie, court bailiffs were present in Parliament after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region, convicted the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, of contempt of court.
He was held in contempt of court due to his defiance of an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a legislator.
Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, who held him in contempt, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.
The judge rejected a letter from the minority side of Parliament claiming the MP was busy with parliamentary duties, hence his continuous absence from court.
The judge stated that accepting the letter from the minority caucus would be against his own ruling.
The lawmaker was restrained from presenting himself for swearing-in, pending the resolution of a legal dispute.
However, despite this directive, Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament.
Mr. Kumi presented himself in Parliament to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.
