Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, the Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe Constituency, has spoken out against galamsey in Ghana.
Speaking in Parliament, he remarked that the subject of galamsey in Ghana is indeed complex and sensitive, and he is concerned about how politicised it has become, making it difficult to deal effectively.
Commenting on a statement by the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to Parliament, he said the minister’s passion for the issue is evident, but it’s crucial to move beyond partisan blame and work together to find solutions.
To address galamsey, he added, it’s essential to have a robust judicial system that can prosecute offenders efficiently. “The judiciary should prioritise cases related to galamsey, ensuring that those found guilty face the full force of the law. This will help deter others from engaging in these illegal activities,” he said.
He also emphasised that many individuals engage in these activities due to unemployment and lack of job security, so by offering training and job opportunities in sectors like agriculture, sports, and environmental conservation, we can reduce the appeal of galamsey since the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment and health is undeniable.
In conclusion, he said, It’s crucial that we take immediate action to address this issue and work towards a sustainable future for Ghana.
The Second Deputy Minority Whip therefore emphasised that it’s imperative that we put aside political differences and work together to find solutions. The devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, health, and economy is undeniable.
He warned that Ghana may soon struggle to access clean drinking water.
“It’s essential to recognise that galamsey is a collective problem that requires a collective solution. Pointing fingers and being political about it will not yield results. Instead, we must work together, share ideas, and support each other to combat this menace,” he said.
