The key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, Gregory Afoko, has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra after being in detention for ten years.
His bail was set at GH₵500,000 with two sureties on February 21, 2025.
On February 17, 2025, Afoko filed a new bail application before the Accra High Court.
He had previously prayed for bail during the trial but was denied.
The suspect was apprehended in 2015 and accused of plotting with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home.
The trial began in 2019 and ended in 2023.
The jury in the trial, however, returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to murder against Gregory Afoko.
The court thus ordered Gregory Afoko’s retrial. After applying for bail twice, he was arrested again and denied it.
