The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), led by its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, is committed to equipping the next generation of medical laboratory scientists with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

As part of this initiative, Medical Laboratory Sciences students at the University of Ghana recently participated in a seminar on Genomic medicine. Themed “Genomic Medicine: Gaps and Opportunities for Africa,” the event was organised by the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) at the University of Ghana.

The seminar provided a platform for students to explore the potential, challenges, and ethical implications of Genomic medicine. A panel discussion on “Addressing Legal Frameworks, Ethical Considerations, and Commercialisation Strategies for Genomics in Africa” featured expert insights on the integration of genomics into healthcare systems and medical research.

The University of Ghana’s four-year Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences program offers specialised training in clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, histopathology, and immunology. Through a combination of laboratory sessions and hospital rotations, students gain hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in hospitals, research institutions, and public health. Graduates also have opportunities to further their education at the master’s, PhD, and Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS.D) program.

Highlighting the significance of Genomic Medicine, Dr. Amegatcher stated, “From personalised medicine to advanced diagnostics, genomics is transforming healthcare, and our students are at the forefront of this revolution. GAMLS remains committed to bridging the gap between innovation and practice, ensuring that future lab professionals are well-prepared for the era of precision medicine.”

Through initiatives like this seminar, GAMLS continues to play a critical role in advancing Genomic Medicine education, empowering future lab professionals to drive innovation and improve healthcare outcomes in Ghana and beyond.
