The Ghana National Service (GFS) has called for an emergency fund to help the service support personnel who get injured in line with their duties.
The Service lamented that one of the major challenges affecting them is the unavailability of any secured insurance package to bear the cost of treating injured personnel.
DO1 Alex Nartey, a communications team member, revealed this during an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
The situation he stated was a hindrance to their effectiveness and has therefore appealed to the government to consider an emergency fund to support them.
This was in response to a question about how they deal with personnel injuries.
”This is a significant challenge that threatens our duties. We currently do not have an insurance package for fire officers, so if you are deployed to a scene to deal with an emergency situation, ‘na akoye s33 wo ni wu Nyame,’ that is, if you are deployed to a scene of an outbreak or an emergency and you are injured, it will be between you and your God.”
He said that “efforts were made with the previous government and are being made with the current government to establish an emergency fund to cater for personnel who are injured while on duty.”
He also emphasised the need for the current administration to consider replacing their fire tenders, which have become ineffective.
He stated that while the previous government built new training schools and fire stations, it failed to replace their outdated logistics.
