The Member of Parliament for the Korle Klottey constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, said the recent expose by the BBC Eye is a national security issue that must be taken seriously.
She said it is her prayer that given the expose and the global embarrassment we see now, we will take this matter very seriously.
Commenting on the matter before the House on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, she underscored the need for authorities to take immediate action to deal with the importation of illicit drugs.
The lawmaker opined that the ramification of this illicit drug inflow into Ghana goes beyond the large scale and affecting people’s lives, the security in our schools, affecting the security of our ordinary citizens.
She suggested that the law enforcement agencies responsible for this needs to be strengthened.
‘’We had, up until a few weeks ago, collaborations between the United States government, specific narcotics, and law enforcement affairs with the government of Ghana, helping to combat some of these transnational crimes and illicit drug use. Since the suspension of this, Mr. Speaker, I believe this may have contributed to what we are seeing. We need to reengage some of these international agencies and strengthen our capacity to monitor what is going on in our borders and ensure that when we actually do track down these criminals, the prosecution of them and effective implementation of our regulations is done in order to be a disincentive for those who wish to use Ghana as a transit point.”
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings maintained that Ghana’s youth are increasingly becoming a target of these illicit drug importations, which pose a national security threat because they affect the country in so many ways, necessitating a multifaceted approach to effectively address the issue of addiction and mental health.
