The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Parents Teacher Association (PTA), Rev. Joshua Terkpenor, has indicated that restoring the PTA to its original structure is a step in the right direction.
He explained that the PTA was not totally cancelled by the previous government, but the restructuring of the PTA, which scrapped the payment of dues, almost collapsed it.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he said the existence of the PTA supported the government’s efforts in transforming the education sector.
He said the PTA supported educational projects and helped maintain discipline in schools.
“It was not totally cancelled during the past government. But what happened was that they instructed us not to collect dues and other contributions like we used to. So, in essence, they were about collapsing the PTA. But we have realised that we cannot educate our children without the teachers, and that is why it is important that parents and teachers collaborate in providing holistic education for our children. When we got information that the current government intends to restore the PTA to its former structure, we were excited.
The PTA has been instrumental in supporting education in Ghana. Travel around the various schools across the country, and you will see the hand of the PTA there. But when the implementation of the free SHS started, the PTA in its original structure failed to exist. So, at the announcement of the reinstatement of the PTA fully, it is exciting news, and we support it.”
