Former Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, has asked Ghanaians to prepare to pay for the cost involved in sending their children to secondary school.
Although President John Dramani Mahama has been emphatic that he will not cancel free SHS, the Assin South MP claims the policy will face serious review that will make Ghanaians pay the boarding component.
He stated that the ongoing National Education Dialogue is being used to push that agenda.
“President John Dramani Mahama says he will not cancel free SHS, but he is behind the National Education Forum, which is a way to make Ghanaians pay for an aspect of the policy. What has come out of the discussions so far is that they want to scrap the boarding aspect of it. If we don’t take care, those who want boarding school but do not have the resources would be deprived of free SHS.”
“Another issue arising is the potential reintroduction of the cut-off point. Additionally, there is a proposal to review the policy, which may result in some individuals paying for the free SHS. This implies that the free SHS policy would be compromised, as the absence of the boarding component essentially negates the policy’s intent.”
He also slammed President John Dramani Mahama for claiming that only 3.4 million persons benefitted from the policy. He said the true and original figure is 3.5 million and has therefore advised those who brief him to give him accurate information.
