The St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Suhum Municipality, Eastern Region, has celebrated the Catholic Education Week 2025, emphasising the importance of education while recognising outstanding students.
The event featured awards for over 50 students and teachers who excelled in an English essay contest, demonstrating their academic prowess.

The event emphasised the value of collaboration among educators, parents, and the community in promoting quality education.
Dr. Mrs. Catherine Agyapomaah Appiah Pinkrah, head of Academia at St. Theresa Parish, encouraged teachers to constantly improve their knowledge and skills in order to empower students; she compared teachers to shepherds who guide their students like sheep to academic success.
She also admonished parents to actively support their children’s education by visiting them at school and monitoring their progress.

She posited that there was a need for the government to be supported to provide holistic education since the government could not do it all alone.

‘’We need supplemental books for our children. The government is providing free textbooks, but we also need supplementary books such as storybooks for the pupils and our students. We need to restock our libraries with books to encourage our children to read. We can also support in the area of technology by incorporating it into our learning activities. We need more support in the area of libraries, books, and digital infrastructure,’’ she added.
Rev. Father Paul Lawer Kodjo of Suhum Roman Catholic Church explained that Catholic Education Week aims to raise awareness about the significance of education among parents, teachers, and the community.

This awareness enables them to nurture the skills and talents of Catholic school students.
Father Kudjo appealed to the government, NGOs, and individuals to support Roman Catholic schools, which face challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and teaching materials.

‘’The event is to create awareness of the work the Catholic Church is doing in the area of education throughout the world. We also create awareness in our community about the importance of education for their children and our children. Then we also create awareness that families and parents should sacrifice for the good of their own children for the betterment of Ghana and their future.’’

The man of God stated that the Church has emphasised the importance of parents being responsible for their children, being more serious and committed, as instructed by the holy book, and setting good examples.
