Dr. Sampson Anoma, a senior lecturer at the Department of Accountancy and Accounting Information Systems, Kumasi Technical University, has described the National Economic Dialogue as a style of leadership that the current administration seeks to gather varied opinions in managing the economy.
He posited that President Mahama appears to be a leader who prioritises the establishment of committees and the organisation of forums in gathering opinions and proposals to help him govern.
According to him, “President Mahama is someone who likes committees and forums because he does not want to take entrenched positions, so he has decided to engage stakeholders to help him gather diverse opinions and proposals so he can select the best ones to manage the country.” With this management style, the individual will be able to use an excuse if something bad happens, claiming that he was not the only one who proposed a solution. This is Mahama’s preferred management style.
But, in the end, this is just one type of management style. Our leaders manage the country, so it is not wrong. The danger here is that when the recommendations are submitted, the person in charge of implementing them will compare them to the party’s vision and his personal vision, and if they do not align, he will drop these recommendations, which Ghanaians have spent time proposing.”
He referenced the constitutional review commission’s work under the late President John Atta Mills and the failure to implement the recommendations as well as the one that was done by former President Akufo-Addo and the recent one being worked on following the directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
He lamented that the politics in Ghana makes it difficult for such recommendations from forums to be implemented.
The National Economic Dialogue (NED) 2025 started on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, bringing together some of Ghana’s leading economic minds, policymakers, and industry leaders to deliberate on the country’s pressing economic challenges.
Spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, the two-day forum is being held under the theme, “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together.” The event seeks to address key economic concerns, propose sustainable policy solutions, and chart a path toward long-term economic stability.
