Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA), Michael Donyina Mensah, has opined that Ghana has little to celebrate despite marking its 68th independence anniversary from colonial rule.
He has therefore commended President John Dramani Mahama for scaling down the celebration.
Mr. Mensah said the decision will save the country several million Ghana cedis.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he noted that “first of all, I congratulate Ghana for celebrating its independence day. However, there are issues to be discussed. At the moment, I don’t think there is anything meaningful to celebrate.
The question I would want to ask is, are we truly independent? What are we really celebrating? If we claim to be celebrating our independence this year, I want to be able to know what we are celebrating. Are we truly at the place where we want to be as a country?
I don’t think so. Frankly, there is actually little to celebrate, so I am not surprised President John Dramani Mahama ordered a scale down of the celebration because there is actually little or nothing to celebrate.”
