The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed disappointment in the attack on personnel who were deployed to contain the explosion that occurred with explosives in Odumase, near Konongo, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
A member of the GNFS Public Relations Department, ADO 1 Alex King Nartey, disclosed that some of their officers have sustained injuries after they were attacked.
He said the area where the explosion occurred is within a galamsey-prone area.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the affected shops deal in explosives and other materials used by illegal miners.
He disclosed that the fire tender serving residents in Konongo and other adjoining areas has been damaged.
”They attacked us and injured several of our officers. The only fire tender that serves the entire Konongo area has been damaged. What this means is that if there is another outbreak, we would have to depend on a tender from Ejisu. It is unfortunate that these attacks keep occurring.”
Meanwhile, he has revealed a lot of people have been injured, with some of them having parts of their bodies dismembered.
He said the scene of the outbreak was 60 meters away from a gas station.
ADO 1 Alex King Nartey cautioned the Ghanaian public against attacking them, or they would have to put out a fire when there is an outbreak.
“We are cautioning Ghanaians to stop attacking fire officers when they are deployed to scenes to put out fires. It is very unfortunate that these attacks are coming from the Ashanti region. Opinion leaders should make concerted efforts to encourage their people to stop attacking. If they do not stop doing that or stop lying to our officers, they will have to find ways to put out fires themselves.”
