Three persons have been confirmed dead following the explosion at Odumase, with several others, including firefighters, injured.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region confirmed this in its update on the incident.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Department noted that a fire outbreak broke out at Odumasi, opposite Barika Herbal, on March 5, 2025, at 19:03 hours, and quickly spread to nearby houses, affecting 30 buildings and 8 shops.
The Service said that upon arrival at 19:13 hours, firefighters encountered an explosion from a shop containing explosives, injuring five crew members and damaging their fire tender.
The pump operator collapsed, making it impossible to initiate firefighting. Hostile civilians pelted stones at responders, forcing them to withdraw.
A backup crew from FK Jersey (Ejisu) was dispatched but did not proceed to the scene due to security concerns.
Meanwhile, the injured officers have since been discharged from the Asante Akim Central Government Hospital. The cause of the fire, the GNFS said, was under investigation.
