The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has asked the Data Protection Commission to scale up its operations.
He directed them to establish a regional presence and scale up from a commission to an authority.
Mr. Sam George was speaking during a visit to the Data Protection Commission on Friday, March 14, 2025, to introduce the new Executive Director to the Commission.
He underscored the need for collaboration between the new Executive Director, Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, and the outgoing one, Madam Patricia Adusei Poku.
To the new boss, he advised him to prioritise staff welfare.
The minister also pledged the ministry’s support towards the growth and sustainability of the commission.
He stressed the need for the Commission to focus on enforcing compliance and also to build internal capacity to retain expertise within the public sector.
“Once you begin to drive compliance, the private sector will be looking for competent, skilled people. You must scale up to retain your staff, or else you become a conveyor belt, training people only to lose them to the private sector,” he stated.
For his part, the new Executive Director expressed strong optimism that the Commission will achieve remarkable things.
“I’m confident that together, we’ll achieve remarkable things. Let’s work collaboratively to establish a strong regional presence and prioritise innovation”.
He promised to prioritise public education and stakeholder engagement to enhance awareness and compliance.
“Today marks the beginning of an exciting journey. We have a lot of work ahead, but I am encouraged by the energy and support in the room. We will build a strong, resilient data protection framework that will make a lasting impact across the country,” he assured.
