The Economic Fighters League has submitted the first in a series of recommendations to the Secretariat of the Constitutional Review Committee.
According to EFL, although it believes in a new constitution now, it is also of the view that there was the need for them to engage towards the shaping of a people-centred constitution.
The League indicated that the skewed nature of the thematic areas provided – for example, a review on political parties but not on the electoral system on which the parties run. This, to them, limits the possible change. It, however, admonished Ghanaians to participate in the process.
It proposed an amendment of Article 257(1), which states that ”all public lands shall be vested in the President on behalf of, and in trust for, the people of Ghana”.
They want it to read, ”All public lands in Ghana shall be vested in the people of Ghana.”
EFL also wants an amendment of Article 257 (6) which states that every mineral in its natural state in, under or upon any land in Ghana, rivers, streams, water courses throughout Ghana, the exclusive economic zone and any area covered by the territorial sea or continental shelf is the property of the Republic of Ghana and shall be vested in the President on behalf of, and in trust of, the people of Ghana”.
