A security analyst, Mr Andrews Asiedu Tetteh, has advised the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to focus mainly on operations if he wants to succeed.
He posited that the police is a groundwork, hence he should dedicate his time to intensifying police presence.
The analyst opined that we need the police presence on the grounds so they will maintain law and order.
He also wants him to address the welfare of service personnel and introduce reforms that will transform the service.
‘’Yohonu should concentrate on operations. The police are about the groundwork. We need the police presence on the grounds the more. He should introduce many reforms and deal with issues of welfare. He should also deal with corruption in the Police Service.’’
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said extortion in the service is giving the service a bad name. A lot of rot, a lot of corruption, many bad things are happening in the service, and so he should be vigilant and solve some of these things. I expect more dismissals in the police department. Those who misconduct themselves should be dismissed.
On external security issues, he asked him to deal with crime but was quick to add that ”I don’t expect a lot from him because he (Yohonu) will not control the police, but President Mahama will be the one to control the police. What the president will direct is what he will do because if he fails to do that, he will not be granted any contract extension”.
He suggested that until we review the constitution and change how the IGP and other security heads are appointed, no Ghanaian should expect the IGP to be firm and discharge the duties without any political interference.
