The National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has disclosed that the failure of the previous government to add them to the implementation of the free Senior High School collapsed several private senior high schools across the country.
Executive Director of the Council, Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetua, told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that over 160 private senior high schools are out of business.
He stated that per the 2020 data that was part of the placement done, the private schools surpassed 352, but the latest data available shows that only 168 are currently operating.
He indicated that per the data, it shows over 184 private SHSs have collapsed.
Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetua said, ‘’from the 2020 data used for the school’s placement, we had over 352 private schools. But the current availability to us shows that only 168 schools are operational. That means over 184 schools have collapsed due to the implementation of the free SHS without our inclusion. So you can tell the negative impact this had on us”.
Meanwhile, he has stated that the new government is currently consulting with them on the best way to include them in the free SHS implementation.
He said that the government has established a committee to work on this, and that they expect to allocate over 150,000 students to both day and boarding schools.
“I can confidently confirm that the new government has taken steps to incorporate private schools into the free SHS policy. The government informed us that we will be allocated 150,000 students for private schools. There are congestion issues in our various public schools, and private schools are prepared to assist the government in addressing these challenges.”
