President John Dramani Mahama has promised to resource the Ghana Fire Service to make it more equipped and responsive.
He stated that concerns have been raised over recent fire outbreaks across the country, with homes reduced to rubble, businesses devastated, and essential infrastructure severely damaged.
He also indicated that families have lost their livelihoods, and, in some heartbreaking instances, lives have been tragically cut short.
President Mahama said these fire outbreaks do not only place economic suffering on the country but also immense pressure on emergency response systems.
Speaking at the swearing-in of the Director General of the Prisons Service and the announcement of the appointment of the acting heads of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Immigration Service, he said last year alone, 6,436 fire outbreaks were recorded, underscoring the urgent need for a fire service that is well-equipped, proactive, and responsive.
To this end, he has charged the acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Ohene Ntow-Sarpong, to dedicate herself to the service in making the GNFS more responsive.
He admonished her to focus her leadership on public education, emergency response readiness, and strict enforcement of fire safety regulations, adding that fire audits must be effective and safety laws enforced without compromise.
He then pledged to give the service all the needed resources so it can achieve its core objective.
“You have my full assurance that this administration will provide every necessary resource to ensure that the Ghana National Fire Service is well-equipped to protect lives and property,” he said.
President Mahama said he has already indicated in the budget that all ongoing essential projects for the service would be completed, while officer welfare will remain a priority.
