Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans by the government to provide female students at the Labone Senior High School with temporary dormitories following the fire outbreak that destroyed dormitories in the school.
He gave the assurance when he visited the school on Monday, March 17, 2025, to gather firsthand information on the fire outbreak that destroyed three girls’ dormitories in the school over the weekend.
A fire swept through three girls’ dormitories at Labone Senior High School in Accra on Sunday afternoon.
The fire broke out while students were attending their afternoon prep.
Three out of the six dormitories were affected.
One dormitory was completely destroyed, while two others suffered partial damage.
Interacting with management and students, Mr Haruna Iddrisu told them that the government would provide them with temporary housing until the affected dormitories were repaired.
He also promised that if the budget allocated to his ministry allows for a new dormitory to be constructed, he will do so.
Mr Iddrisu also disclosed that the ministry will set up an emergency fund that will help address challenges posed by rainstorms, fire outbreaks, and other unexpected disasters in schools.
“I have asked a team to come over now and do an assessment. We will get them located (to a temporary facility), and work should commence. If my budget allows me to be able to start the construction for a new female dormitory, we will do so for the Labone Secondary School.”
