Bia East Member of Parliament, Hon. Richard Acheampong has emphasized the significant depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi between 2015 and 2024, from 9.6% to 90.2%.
He also highlighted the 50.4% increase in inflation, which peaked at 54% before decreasing to 23.8%.
Moreover, Hon. Acheampong has questioned the Previous government’s claim of having four months of import cover, given their failure to pay debt interest and principal.
Commenting during the 2025 Budget Debate in Parliament, he stated that the NPP government couldn’t settle its debts undermines its credibility.
The issue of debt repayment has been a concern in Ghana, with the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio increasing significantly in recent years. The government has faced criticism for its handling of the economy, including the depreciation of the cedi and the rising inflation due to poor governance by Nana Addo’s administration
Again , the Bia East MP said he feels optimistic about the budget presented to the house, and is urging everyone to work together to ensure its successful implementation by President John Dramani Mahama
He said the budget will bring stability to prices and benefit everyone.
