President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) will be in charge of the disbursement of allowances for nursing and teacher trainees across Ghana.
He announced this during the president’s “Thank You Tour” in Tamale on Saturday, March 22, where he engaged with students, professionals, and community leaders.
According to the president, this forms part of efforts aimed at addressing the long-standing concerns over the delayed payment of allowances.
He explained that the new arrangement would bring an end to the inconsistencies in allowance payments.
“There is good news for teacher and nursing trainees. Nursing and teacher trainees allowances are to be paid directly by the Controller and Accountant-General.
“This has been made a part of the compensations item in the budget, and this will permanently eliminate the delay in trainees receiving their allowances. This means that anytime public sector workers receive their monthly salaries, teachers and nursing trainees will also receive their allowances.”
Presenting the budget statement for the 2025 fiscal year, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that the government has allocated GH¢684 million for the payment of both teacher and nursing trainee allowances.
He said on the day that the allocation was part of the government’s ongoing commitment to investing in the country’s education and healthcare sectors, ensuring that future teachers and healthcare trainees are adequately supported during their training.
“We have allocated GH¢203 million for the payment of teacher trainee allowances and another GH¢480 million for nursing trainee allowances,” Dr Forson declared.
