The minority in Parliament has cautioned the Minister for Justice and Attorney General and the National Security to carry out their activities within the laws of Ghana and stop harassing the former political appointees.
The Minority, through its Second Deputy Whip and MP for Waija-Gbawe, Mr Jerry Ahmed, slammed the AG and the security operatives over the recent raid conducted in the homes of some appointees.
He explained that the rate at which the state security is harassing the former political appointees without following the due process is becoming one too many, and such unprofessionalism and illegalities must stop now since this country is governed by law.
Mr Jerry Ahmed named some former political appointees who have recently suffered similar actions of the state security without subjecting them before court for a determination of whatever accusations are levelled against each of these appointees.
He said the security operatives invaded the privacy of the affected persons without a warrant, adding that Article 18 prohibits the excessive or forceful means that could infringe on individuals liberty.
He also lamented that authorities are engaging in the arbitrary detention and seizure of the property of the persons affected.
He called for accountability and not the capriciousness of state power to settle political scores.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib called on Ghanaians to criticise the government and demand an end to the lawlessness currently ongoing.
He said the minority stands resolute in its defence of democracy and rule of law, and if our institutions must command respect, they must act with integrity, fairness and respect for individual rights.
“We urge the media, civil society and well-meaning Ghanaians to stand against the growing trend of intimidation through state institutions. We will continue to demand justice, transparency and adherence to the principles of constitutional democracy. Ghana’s democracy cannot thrive under an atmosphere of fear and selective justice.”
