Former Deputy General of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Obiri Boahen, has urged Ghanaians to give President John Dramani Mahama a break over his security appointments.
The private legal practitioner says the president has the authority to appoint and unappoint people.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that those who have slammed the President, including his party, desist from that and allow the President to exercise his constitutional powers.
“Let’s be very honest. President Mahama is the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and has the authority to appoint or unappoint anyone. He is in charge of security. When you look at the structure, you will realise that he appoints soldiers to the GRA, Narcotics and other agencies. He is appointing these individuals in line with the constitution of the country.
He is also privy to information which informs him of his appointments. People will attack him, but he is the one in charge. I am not in support of those who are criticising him. What wrong has he committed in reassigning security heads? Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. We have to be very fair. I am not NDC; I am NPP, but I am a level-headed person and will not allow politics to cloud my judgement or my opinion over issues.”
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that the same thing was done after the president appointed Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, saying, What exactly is the NPP complaining about? It is needless to attack the present over what happened.
